Cuckoo is a social enterprise
We all firmly believe that we can improve the world by cultivating a culture of social entrepreneurship. That's why we founded Cuckoo. Nobody gets rich with this company, not even the founders. Right from the start, we want to donate a fixed amount of 10€ per person for every booking to innovative, non-profit projects in the region we are traveling to, establishing a positive link between us travellers and local communities. This amount will be donated even if we do not make a profit at the beginning. As soon as we are financially able, the amount donated per booking will increase significantly. This is our mission and our contribution to a better world.
The next steps
First, we will publish a funding guideline and the first project partners in the cities visited by the end of 2018. We already have contact to a whole series of great projects, which are worth to be supported by us. However, a number of legal and organisational issues still need to be clarified first.
In the medium term, we are also considering actively involving members in the selection and evaluation of the projects funded. It is important to us to make the processes associated with project funding as transparent and participatory as possible.
What is planned beyond that?
Over time, we plan not only to extend project funding to other destinations, but also to broaden the focus of funding. In addition to financing local projects, we would also like to award scholarships to people who have promising ideas for a social business but cannot afford to participate in the remote programs. We not only want to enable them to travel, but also provide them with the start-up capital they need and access to our network.
We are also aiming for B Corp certification in 2019 and are considering preparing an ECG balance sheet. On the one hand, these instruments are intended to continuously improve and review our internal processes with regard to the sustainable orientation of our business activities. On the other hand, it helps us in communicating with the outside world.
And what about the environment?
Last but not least, the environmental dimension is an essential factor when it comes to the negative consequences of travelling. We have set ourselves the task of keeping the impact on the environment and our climate as low as possible in the future. For example, we are striving for a pricing system that will make travel in the region and by rail more attractive than air travel to a distant location.
However, if you are flying, we will at least make sure that your CO² emissions are balanced and that you stay overseas for as long as possible. We are aware that our plans cannot be implemented overnight. However, it is important to keep these goals in mind.
